Breast Reduction

Surgical reduction of the breasts — tailored to your anatomy, your symptoms, and your vision of balance.

For many women, large breasts are not simply a cosmetic concern. They are a daily source of physical discomfort, functional limitation, and emotional burden. Chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain; painful bra strap grooving; rashes and skin irritation beneath the breast fold; difficulty exercising; and difficulty finding clothing that fits are among the most common complaints that bring patients to consultation for breast reduction.

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is consistently one of the highest-satisfaction procedures in all of plastic surgery. It is transformative not just in appearance, but in quality of life. Dr. June Yoo approaches every reduction with the precision and artistic sensibility that defines her practice: your result will be proportional, natural in appearance, and carefully planned to reflect the outcome you envision — not a generic template.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts, reshape and lift the breast mound, and reposition the nipple-areolar complex to a more youthful, proportional location on the chest. The result is a smaller, lighter, better-supported breast that sits higher on the chest wall, improving both appearance and most importantly, physical comfort.

Most patients pursue breast reduction for a combination of functional and aesthetic reasons. In many cases, the procedure is partially or fully covered by insurance when medical necessity criteria are met, including documented symptoms, failed conservative management, and anticipated resection weight. Dr. Yoo's team will assist with the necessary documentation and pre-authorization process.

Who is a good Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you experience one or more of the following:

  • Chronic neck, shoulder, or upper back pain attributable to breast weight

  • Painful, persistent bra strap grooving on the shoulders

  • Skin irritation, rashes, or intertrigo (skin-on-skin inflammation) beneath the breast fold

  • Difficulty exercising or participating in physical activity due to breast size

  • Poor posture related to the weight of the breasts

  • Nerve symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the arms or hands

  • Significant asymmetry in breast size causing functional or psychological distress

  • Difficulty finding clothing or bras that fit appropriately

  • Emotional distress or reduced quality of life related to breast size

Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have reached a stable weight, are non-smokers (or willing to cease smoking well in advance of surgery), and have realistic expectations for a proportional, natural result. Patients who are significantly above their goal weight may be advised to achieve a more stable weight before proceeding, as significant weight changes after surgery can alter results.

About the Procedure

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, typically taking three to four hours depending on the complexity of the procedure. Many patients will not require drains.

Dr. Yoo prefers to tailor the technique including pedicle and incision pattern to the patient, and will decide with you in consultation which will be best for your body and needs.

Specimen tissue is routinely sent for pathologic evaluation after breast reduction surgery, in accordance with standard of care guidelines — a safety measure that occasionally identifies incidental findings requiring further attention.

Recovery & Results

Most patients are surprised by how manageable breast reduction recovery is relative to the degree of change the procedure produces.

In the first several days, swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate discomfort are expected and well-managed with prescribed medication. Most patients are able to move around comfortably within one to two days and return to light activity and desk work within one to two weeks. Strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.

Swelling resolves gradually over three to six months, and the final shape and position of the breast continue to evolve throughout this period. Scars will appear pink and raised initially and typically soften, flatten, and fade significantly over the course of twelve to eighteen months.

Results from breast reduction are long-lasting and among the most durable of any procedure in plastic surgery. Significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the natural aging process can all affect the breasts over time, but the structural changes made during surgery are permanent. The vast majority of patients report dramatic improvement in their physical symptoms and quality of life. Studies consistently demonstrate high rates of patient satisfaction, improved posture, reduced pain, and increased ability to exercise following breast reduction.
